Jury reaches verdict in Idaho murder trial

Breaking news update published at 3:31 pm ET

A verdict has been reached in the triple murder trial of Chad Daybell, who faced murder and conspiracy charges in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and his second wife's two children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan.

A jury found Daybell guilty of all charges on Thursday, May 30, 2024, after a nearly two-month trial. The verdict concludes a case that has gripped the nation and shed light on the extreme religious beliefs held by Daybell and his late wife, Lori Vallow.

Prosecutors argued that Chad Daybell conspired with Lori Vallow, who is scheduled to go on trial later this year for her alleged role in the murders, to kill Tammy Daybell and the children so that they could be with each other in the afterlife.

The defense, however, claimed that Daybell was innocent and that Tammy Daybell's death was a natural accident, while JJ and Tylee's deaths were a result of Lori Vallow's actions.

The verdict is a major victory for the prosecution and brings a sense of closure to the families of the victims. It also sends a strong message that those who commit heinous crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
